CHAPTER TWELVE

JESSA ROLLED OVER AND groaned in pain. She kept her eyes closed as she groped around the bed beside her for her phone. Finding it, she lifted it to her face and cracked an eye to look at the time. Both eyes popped opened when she realized she’d slept a good chunk longer than the five minutes she’d planned on. Her stomach growled as if just realizing it had missed supper.

Moving slowly, she swung her feet over the bed to the narrow space between the edge of the bed and the wall. She pulled the elastic from her braid and loosened it, allowing her curls to spring free from the confinement. Before she faced anyone though, she was going to take a shower. The dirt and grime from the day felt heavy on her skin.

She grabbed her towel and shower stuff and slid the door open to the rest of the trailer. Thankfully, it was empty, so she didn’t have to talk with anyone. She just needed a few more minutes to herself to wake up.

Feeling one hundred percent better after her shower, Jessa stepped out of the trailer. She spotted her sisters at a picnic table. Addy and Rose were sitting there as well with coloring books and crayons in front of them.

Laurel spotted her right away and stood up. “Hey, sleepyhead! Want some supper?”

“There’s food left?” Jessa asked. “I figured the men would have inhaled your delicious cooking.”

“Not to worry. I made sure to save you some before they got a crack at it.”

Jessa followed her into the trailer.

“Do you want me to heat it up for you?” Laurel asked as she uncovered a plate with fried chicken and potato salad on it. “I can put the chicken on a separate plate.”

“I think it will be fine this way,” Jessa said, eager to get something into her rumbling stomach. She took the plate from Laurel.

“Just water to drink?” Laurel asked as she opened the small fridge.

Jessa nodded. “Thanks. You’re spoiling me. If we’d slept through dinner with Gran, we’d be going hungry.”

“It’s a personal affront if someone in my vicinity goes hungry.” Laurel smiled. “To be honest, I’m in my element cooking for this crowd.”

Jessa shuddered. “Better you than me. Just make sure you don’t overdo it.”

“I’m fine. Rose has turned into a great helper for me.” Laurel led the way out of the trailer. “I get plenty of time to rest. The challenge is coming up with new meals for each day.”

As they approached the picnic table, Jessa saw that the men had returned from wherever they had been. Lance was pulling some more folding chairs out from the storage section of his trailer. As she sat down next to Rose, he glanced over, saw her and smiled.

After he had set up the chairs, he settled on the bench across the picnic table from her. “Guess we wore you out today, huh?”

Jessa pulled apart the bun Laurel had added to her plate and spread some butter on it.
